Gliders are autonomous vehicles (AUVs) self-propelled by small changes in their flotation, which allows to generate displacement of vertical component that with the help of two wings becomes an oblique component, resulting in an efficient forward movement thus minimizing energy consumption.

Without being as fast as other conventional AUVs, gliders represent a significant improvement in terms of range and duration compared to propellers propelled by propellers or jets, extending the duration of ocean missions from hours to months, and several thousand kilometers range , which translates into providing value data to the user on space-time scales not available on other AUV technologies, and significantly less costly than other traditional on-board ocean observation techniques.
